I found this video to be very interesting. The stories covered were surprising in many ways. However the story I found most interesting was the one on people who play World of Warcraft. I have some personal experience with the game and liked comparing it to the stories told.
Video games have never been something that I’ve been into, but my brother, on the other hand goes crazy for them. I have never really understood the fascination with playing games like World of Warcraft, but this story helped to answer some of my questions. One of the things that I found especially odd was when my brother went to visit one of his “game friends” at his home in Virginia. He had never met this person in real life, but insisted that they had a close relationship and that it would be completely normal for him to go and visit.
Like my brother, people in the video expressed their ability to establish relationships with the people that they are playing the game with. Despite skepticism, these particular people claimed that they have been able to develop relationships stronger and more fulfilling than ones that they have made outside the game. It is really interesting to think about that concept because it wasn’t too long ago that relationships such as those could not have existed. The question then becomes, is anything being lost in translation of the internet or can relationships be just as strong through the digital world?
